Scott Hanselman, “Information Overload and Managing the Flow”

Scott is a real super hero when it comes to being efficient. He has been so efficient that Microsoft has swooped him up and turned him into a manager. He utilised this to the full in his talk when he said “I work for Microsoft” and showed a picture of the death star.

ØreDev 2009 Thursday

Rebecca Wirfs-Brock, “Responsibility-Driven Design”

Rebecca Wirfs-Brock is one of the early though-leaders in object-orientation. Her book on RDD came out in 1990.

Rebecca’s keynote speech was a run-through of different ideas about OO design, from the early days up to today. Maybe it was a little bit too basic and sententious for my taste. She described the early thinking with CRC cards (Class, Responsibility, Collaboration) and how those expermints evolved into RDD. In RDD you describe any role from its stereotype. The stereotypes are: Information holder, Structurer, Interfacer, Service provider, Coordinator, and Controller.

ØreDev 2009 Wednesday

Marc Lesser, “Accomplishing More by Doing Less”

Marc Lesser is a speaker with an interesting background, having spent 10 years as a zen monk but also started and managed businesses. His talk started a little unusual, with 60 secs of meditation.

Lesser has expressed his thoughts in what he calls the Less Manifesto. The manifesto is basically saying that if we have less fear, assumptions, distractions, resistance, and busyness we can focus on doing more of the things that really matter to us.
